Joining Bethnal Green Ventures

January 18, 2015 Posted By: Sam Hill

Today we have seen through our first week of twelve at Bethnal Green Ventures – an accelerator programme designed specifically for business start-ups with social merit. This puts us in and amongst an amazing community of people, with nine other teams who have come from an incredible range of backgrounds to bring their ambitions to life – doctors, teachers, scientists, journalists, game makers and researchers, all with great ideas on how to improve the world in some way – be it through improved healthcare and well-being, education or social agency. This has been especially refreshing for me, when 90% of the people I know work in and around the design world.

Being a part of BGV gives us access to an amazing range of industry expertise too. As well as the founders themselves, who have an impressive track record in the start-up scene, there’s a fantastic breadth of talent in the mentor and alumni networks that have built-up across the previous five cohorts.

Our BGV enrolment comes with a membership to the Makerversity collective too, so we also have access to their workshops and facilities as well as – most importantly – their fellow members and their expertise.

Stepping back one more time! Makerversity is located in Somerset House – a beautiful 18th Century building right in the heart of London, overlooking the Thames, and the Southbank Centre beyond. The building is now a huge culture and arts centre, full to the brim with exhibitions, music studios, and all kinds of other creative endeavours.

Put all this together and it’s clear we’ve suddenly become better connected with hundreds – thousands! – of new and interesting minds… a very exciting prospect for the next 3 months and onwards, as we test and learn and build upon Run An Empire.
